Car
To reach Machuqolqa by car from the nearest major town, Cusco, start by driving northwest on Av. de la Cultura. Continue onto the road that leads to Urubamba, following signs for the Sacred Valley. After approximately 1.5 hours, you will arrive in Urubamba. From Urubamba, take the road to Ollantaytambo, following the signs for Route 28G. After roughly 30 minutes, you will reach Ollantaytambo. From here, continue on to the road that leads to Santa Teresa, which will take you through lush landscapes and small villages. Keep driving for about 1 hour until you see signs for Machuqolqa, located off Av. Urubamba, Cusco. Note that parking may be limited, so look for designated areas to leave your vehicle.
Public Transportation
If traveling by public transportation, start your journey at the Cusco bus terminal. Look for buses heading to Urubamba, which typically depart every 30 minutes. The bus ride will take about 1.5 hours. Once in Urubamba, you can catch a colectivo (shared taxi) to Ollantaytambo. Colectivos are a convenient and affordable way to travel, costing around 5-10 soles. After arriving in Ollantaytambo, find a bus or colectivo heading towards Santa Teresa. This leg of the trip will take approximately 1 hour. Once you reach the vicinity of Machuqolqa, be prepared to walk the remaining distance along Av. Urubamba, Cusco. Make sure to confirm with locals for the best route as it can vary.
