History of Southeast Slovenia

Southeast Slovenia, with its rich and fertile lands, has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area was home to various ancient settlements. The arrival of the Romans in the 1st century BCE marked a significant turning point, as they established important trade routes and infrastructure. The remains of Roman roads, villas, and settlements, such as the Roman necropolis in Šmarjeta, offer a glimpse into the region's historical significance during this era.
