History of Free State

The Free State region, historically known as the Orange Free State, has been inhabited for thousands of years. The earliest known inhabitants were the San people, followed by the Khoikhoi. These indigenous groups lived as hunter-gatherers and pastoralists, leaving behind a rich legacy of rock art found in various parts of the region, particularly in the Drakensberg Mountains.
In the early 19th century, the Voortrekkers, Dutch-speaking settlers from the Cape Colony, began to move into the interior of South Africa. Seeking independence from British rule, they ventured into the Free State area around 1836. The Voortrekkers established several settlements, including the town of Winburg, which became one of the first established communities in the region.
On December 16, 1838, a significant conflict took place between the Voortrekkers and the Zulu Kingdom at the Battle of Blood River. Though this battle occurred in present-day KwaZulu-Natal, its aftermath had a profound impact on the Free State as it solidified the Voortrekkers' presence in the region and led to further territorial expansion.
In 1854, the Orange Free State became an independent Boer republic after the signing of the Bloemfontein Convention with the British. Bloemfontein, which had been established by the Voortrekkers in 1846, was designated as the capital. The republic was characterized by its agrarian economy and its governance by a Volksraad, a legislative assembly.
The Free State played a pivotal role in the Anglo-Boer Wars, fought between the British Empire and the Boer republics. The First Anglo-Boer War (1880-1881) ended with a Boer victory, but tensions persisted. The Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) saw extensive battles in the Free State, including the famous Siege of Ladysmith.
