South Africa’s North West province stretches from the Botswana border across broad savannah, rocky hills and cultivated highveld. Getting to and around North West

How to get there

Most international visitors reach North West by road from Johannesburg or Pretoria, both outside the province. O.R. Tambo International Airport in Gauteng is the main long-haul gateway, while Lanseria International Airport, also outside North West, can be convenient for the eastern districts and the Hartbeespoort–Rustenburg corridor. Pilanesberg International Airport is inside the province and serves the Sun City and Pilanesberg area, mainly with limited domestic, charter and seasonal services rather than a broad international network. The N4 is the principal route from Gauteng towards Rustenburg and Botswana, while the N12, N14 and N18 provide other regional approaches.

Transportation

A private car is generally the most practical way to connect North West’s dispersed attractions, particularly wildlife reserves, heritage sites and rural districts. Roads between major centres are generally the backbone of travel, but allow for long distances, livestock, pedestrians, roadworks and limited services away from towns. Local taxis and buses operate in urban areas, while intercity coaches connect larger centres, but public transport is not designed around a province-wide sightseeing itinerary. Inside game reserves, visitors should use authorised self-drive routes or guided game drives and must remain in vehicles except where specifically permitted.

History of North West

Early Tswana Settlement and Iron-Age Communities

Long before the modern province existed, the region was occupied by farming and pastoral communities linked to wider Iron-Age networks across southern Africa. Tswana-speaking societies developed settlements, political systems and trading relationships across what is now North West, with stone-walled sites and archaeological remains recording changing patterns of residence and authority. These communities cultivated crops, kept livestock and worked locally available metals. Their languages, social traditions and chiefly histories remain important to the cultural character of the province, particularly around Mahikeng and other northern districts.

Taung Child and the Archaeology of Human Origins

In 1924, a fossil skull discovered near Taung became known as the Taung Child. Identified as an early hominin, it helped shift scientific attention towards Africa as a central region in the story of human evolution. The find was associated with Raymond Dart and became one of the most influential discoveries in palaeoanthropology. The Taung Heritage Site preserves the memory of this discovery within a wider landscape of fossil-bearing deposits, although the site is not a conventional museum complex and visitors should check local access arrangements.

Voortrekkers, Potchefstroom and Colonial Expansion

Potchefstroom was established in the nineteenth century during the Voortrekker movement and became an early political centre of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, commonly known in English as the South African Republic or Transvaal. Its churches, civic buildings, old streets and university traditions reflect successive layers of settlement. As Boer republics expanded, they came into conflict with African communities and neighbouring powers, and control of land and political authority became increasingly contested. The period shaped the region’s later administrative, agricultural and military history.

The Siege of Mafeking, 1899–1900

Mahikeng, then known to British forces as Mafeking, was the scene of the Siege of Mafeking during the South African War. British troops and civilians were besieged by Boer forces from October 1899 until May 1900, and the event became a major episode in British wartime reporting. Its importance extended beyond the military outcome: the siege influenced imperial public opinion and left a lasting political and commemorative legacy. Modern Mahikeng contains sites and institutions connected with this layered history, though the town’s identity is not reducible to the siege.

Bophuthatswana and Twentieth-Century Transformation

During apartheid, much of the area now forming North West was divided among white-controlled municipalities, commercial farming districts and the homeland of Bophuthatswana. Bophuthatswana became nominally independent in 1977, although its status was not internationally recognised. Its administration developed institutions in places such as Mmabatho, now part of the Mahikeng urban area, while its borders and political structures were shaped by apartheid policy. Sun City, established within Bophuthatswana, became an internationally known resort and entertainment centre, bringing tourism and controversy together in the same landscape.

Platinum Mining and the Modern Province

The Bushveld Igneous Complex underlies much of the Rustenburg area and contains major deposits of platinum-group metals. Mining expanded substantially during the twentieth century and became one of North West’s defining industries, supporting towns, supply networks and migrant labour systems while also producing serious social, environmental and labour challenges. In 1994, the democratic reorganisation of South Africa created the North West province from parts of the former Transvaal, Cape Province and Bophuthatswana. Contemporary North West therefore combines precolonial heritage, apartheid-era legacies, mining economies, agriculture, tourism and new provincial institutions.
