Getting There

  • Walking

    Start at the center of Nuwara Eliya, specifically from the famous Gregory Lake. Head south on the main road (Lake Road) towards the Nuwara Eliya Post Office. Continue straight until you reach the intersection with the A5 road. At the intersection, turn left onto A5 road (also known as the Peradeniya-Badulla-Chenkaladi Highway). Continue along this road for about 6 kilometers. You will pass by several local shops and eateries along the way. Keep an eye out for the signs directing you to Hakgala Botanical Garden. After about 6 kilometers, you will see the entrance to the Hakgala Botanical Garden on your left.

  • Tuk-Tuk

    From any location in Nuwara Eliya, you can easily find a tuk-tuk (three-wheeler) by going to the main roads or asking locals. Inform the driver that you want to go to Hakgala Botanical Garden. The drive will take approximately 20 minutes depending on traffic. The driver will take you along the A5 road (Peradeniya-Badulla-Chenkaladi Highway). You’ll pass through picturesque tea estates and hills. The driver will drop you off right at the entrance of the garden.

  • Bicycle

    If you prefer a more adventurous route, consider renting a bicycle from one of the many rental shops in Nuwara Eliya. Begin your journey from Gregory Lake and head south on Lake Road until you reach the A5 road. Turn left onto A5 road and pedal for about 6 kilometers. This route is scenic, with beautiful views of the surrounding hills and tea plantations. Be cautious as the road can be busy with traffic. The entrance to Hakgala Botanical Garden will be on your left.
