Eastern Region Essentials

Eastern Region in Uganda can be accessed via Entebbe International Airport (EBB), which is the main international gateway to the country. From Entebbe, you can take a domestic flight to Soroti Airport or travel by road. The road journey from Kampala, the capital city, to Jinja, Mbale, or Soroti in the Eastern Region takes approximately 3 to 6 hours, depending on your destination. Buses and private taxis are available for hire. Additionally, the region is accessible by train, with services running from Kampala to Jinja.
Once in Eastern Region, you have several transportation options. Boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are a popular and quick way to get around towns. History of Eastern Region

The Kingdom of Busoga, one of Uganda's traditional kingdoms, is situated in the Eastern Region. It was formed by a union of eleven chiefdoms under the leadership of Kintu, the first Kyabazinga (king). The kingdom plays a significant role in the cultural identity of the Basoga people, with the Kyabazinga serving as both a cultural and spiritual leader. The kingdom's history is marked by its rich traditions, including ceremonies, dances, and the use of the Lusoga language.
In the early colonial period, the Battle of Mengo Hill in 1892 had significant implications for the Eastern Region. Though primarily fought in Buganda, its effects rippled through neighboring regions, including Eastern Uganda. The British victory led to the consolidation of their power and the subsequent colonization of Uganda, altering the political landscape of the Eastern Region.
Jinja, the second largest town in Uganda and located in the Eastern Region, is famously known as the source of the Nile River. The discovery of the Nile's source by European explorers in the 19th century brought international attention to the area. Jinja subsequently developed into a major industrial and economic hub, especially with the construction of the Owen Falls Dam in the 1950s, which harnessed the power of the Nile for hydroelectricity.
The Nyero Rock Paintings, located in the Kumi District, are one of the most important archaeological sites in Uganda. These ancient rock art sites date back to the Iron Age and are attributed to the Twa people, one of the indigenous groups in the region.
