Old Alabama Town, administered by the Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery, is a captivating open-air museum that brings the past to life. Spanning six blocks in downtown Montgomery, it features over 50 authentically restored structures dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries. These buildings, rescued from across central Alabama, represent a cross-section of Alabama architecture, history, and lifestyles, from an elegant townhouse to rural pioneer living. The Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery was founded in 1967 with the mission to preserve Alabama's architectural and historical heritage. The first major project was the acquisition and restoration of the Ordeman-Mitchell-Shaw Townhouse in 1968, an Italianate residence dating back to the 1850s. Today, Old Alabama Town includes homes, businesses, churches, and schools, offering visitors a tangible connection to the lives of those who shaped the region. Costumed interpreters are available to answer questions and provide insights into the daily lives of Alabamians during this period. Highlights include the Lucas Tavern, which serves as the visitor center and dates back to 1834, the Ordeman-Shaw House, and the Working Block, which showcases various trades and industries of the time. Visitors can explore the Living Block, featuring a one-room schoolhouse, a doctor's office, and a church.
