Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, located in the Ariège department of southern France, is more than just a ruined castle; it's a symbol of religious resistance and a place steeped in history. The castle's origins trace back to the early 13th century when it was rebuilt on a site with evidence of human settlement dating back 80,000 years. The Occitan name Montsegur translates to "safe hill". Montségur gained prominence as a refuge for the Cathars, a religious group deemed heretical by the Catholic Church. By 1232, it became the headquarters of the Cathar Church. In 1244, after a 10-month siege by French royal forces, the castle fell. Approximately 200 Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned at the stake. This event marked the end of Catharism in the region and solidified Montségur's place in history. The current fortress, built after the original Cathar castrum was destroyed, features a courtyard and a keep. Its high altitude of 1,207 meters offers panoramic views of the Pyrenees. Visitors can explore the ruins, learn about the castle's history, and reflect on the events that transpired there. The nearby Montségur Archaeological Museum displays artifacts found on the site, providing further insight into the lives of those who once inhabited the castle.
