Discover more about Grandview Point

Grandview Point stands as one of the most captivating overlooks along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Situated approximately halfway between Grand Canyon Village and Desert View, along Desert View Drive (SR 64), this vantage point provides sweeping views of the canyon's vastness. At an elevation of approximately 7,400 feet (2,250 meters), Grandview Point is among the highest locations on the South Rim. From this elevated perch, visitors can see a wide expanse of the canyon, including the Colorado River and the colorful layers of rock that tell the area's geological story. Landmarks such as Cottonwood Creek, Tanner Canyon, and Horseshoe Mesa are also visible. The vegetation around Grandview Point is denser and more varied than in other areas due to the higher elevation and greater rainfall. In the late 19th century, Grandview Point was the site of mining activity. Miners like Pete Berry and Ralph Cameron extracted copper, gold, and silver from the Last Chance Mine below the rim. Berry constructed the Grandview Hotel in the 1890s to supplement his mining income, catering to the growing tourism industry. The Grandview Trail was initially built to support these mining operations. While the hotel is no longer standing, and the Park Service has restored the area to its natural state, Grandview Point remains a popular destination for its views and access to the Grandview Trail. The Grandview Trail descends steeply into the canyon and is considered a strenuous hike.
