Trail of Time: A Geological Journey Through the Grand Canyon
Walk through time along the South Rim, exploring the Grand Canyon's geological history one million years at a time on this accessible trail.
The Trail of Time is an interpretive walking trail that focuses on Grand Canyon's vistas and rocks, encouraging visitors to ponder, explore, and understand the magnitude of geologic time and the stories told by canyon rock layers and landscapes. Located on the South Rim, the fully accessible, 2.83-mile (4.56 km) paved trail is designed as a geological timeline, where each meter signifies one million years of the Grand Canyon's geologic history. Starting at the Yavapai Geology Museum, about a half-hour walk from Mather Point and the Canyon View Visitor Center, the trail extends to Grand Canyon Village and beyond. Bronze markers are embedded in the pavement, marking your location in time; every tenth marker is labeled in millions of years. The trail features rocks and exhibits that explain how the Grand Canyon and its rock formed. Walking west from Yavapai Geology Museum takes you backward in time. Alternatively, walking east from Grand Canyon Village takes you forward in time, from Grand Canyon's oldest rocks to canyon carving and Grand Canyon's human history. The Trail of Time offers breathtaking vistas of the Grand Canyon, providing a visceral appreciation for the age of the Earth and how human timescales interface with geologic time.
