Discover more about Bright Angel Lodge

Bright Angel Lodge, a Registered National Historic Landmark, sits on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, offering visitors a unique blend of history and stunning views. Designed by famed architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter in 1935, the lodge reflects a rustic, natural character, reminiscent of a rambling pioneer settlement. The lodge's history dates back to 1896 when James Thurber established the first accommodations at the head of the Bright Angel Trail. Over the years, the property evolved, eventually becoming part of the Grand Canyon Railroad. Colter was commissioned to redesign the Bright Angel complex to accommodate the growing number of middle-class tourists while preserving the area's natural beauty and cultural heritage. Bright Angel Lodge incorporates culturally significant structures, including the Buckey O'Neill Cabin, originally home to one of Roosevelt's Rough Riders, and the Red Horse Station, which served as the post office for 20 years. The Bright Angel History Room showcases the impact of Fred Harvey, Mary Colter, and the Santa Fe Railway on the Grand Canyon. Today, Bright Angel Lodge offers a variety of lodging options, from cozy historic cabins with shared bathrooms to standard lodge rooms and the one-of-a-kind Buckey O'Neill Cabin. Guests can enjoy dining at the Harvey House Café, Fred Harvey Burger, or the Arizona Steakhouse. The lodge also features a gift shop, lounge, and coffee shop.
