Discover more about Hopi Point

Hopi Point, jutting out further into the Grand Canyon than any other point on the South Rim, provides visitors with unobstructed views of this natural wonder. Located along Hermit Road, it's a popular spot to witness the sunrise or sunset, offering panoramic vistas of the canyon, including five views of the Colorado River. Named after the Hopi Tribe, who have lived in the region for thousands of years, the point holds historical significance. In the early 20th century, it was the site of one of the first tourist camps. Later, the U.S. Forest Service built a fire lookout here in 1909, replaced in 1927 by a steel tower that still stands, marking a historic role in conservation. Visitors can reach Hopi Point via the free Hermits Rest (Red) Route shuttle bus, which operates from March 1st to November 30th. Alternatively, a 2.5-mile walk along the Rim Trail offers stunning views. During the winter months (December to February), private vehicles are allowed on Hermit Road, providing direct access to the point. From Hopi Point, you can see landmarks such as Havasupai Point and the Great Scenic Divide to the west. The views extend across the canyon to the North Rim, showcasing formations like Horus Temple, Osiris Temple, and Isis Temple.
