Getting There

    From the King Canyon Trailhead in Saguaro National Park West, follow the King Canyon Trail for approximately 1 mile. The trail is well-marked and has a gradual incline, gaining around 250 feet in elevation. The hike should take about 30-45 minutes. There are no fees associated with hiking to the picnic area.

    Take the Sun Tran bus route 6 towards Tucson Mountain Park. From the bus stop, use a rideshare service (Uber/Lyft) to reach the King Canyon Trailhead. The rideshare will take approximately 10-15 minutes. From the trailhead, follow the walking directions. Sun Tran bus fare is $1.75 per ride. A rideshare from the bus stop to the trailhead will cost approximately $10-$15.

    From Tucson, drive to the Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park. Follow the signs for the King Canyon Trailhead. Parking at the trailhead is free. From the parking lot, follow the walking directions.

Mam-A-Gah Picnic Area is a hidden gem within the Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park. Unlike other picnic areas in the park, Mam-A-Gah is exclusively accessible by foot, offering a secluded and serene experience for those willing to take the short hike. The journey begins at the King Canyon Trailhead, leading you along a well-maintained trail for approximately one mile with a modest elevation gain of about 250 feet. As you approach the picnic area, you'll be greeted by stunning desert scenery, including majestic saguaro cacti and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The picnic area itself features shaded structures with picnic tables, providing a comfortable spot to relax and enjoy a meal. Mam-A-Gah provides a unique opportunity to connect with the Sonoran Desert landscape. The area was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, adding a touch of historical significance to your visit. Keep an eye out for the CCC-built foot-operated garbage receptacle, a rare piece of park history. Note that since it's a hike-in only location, you'll need to pack out all trash. Also, pets are not permitted in the Mam-A-Gah picnic area.
