Lake Sevan: The Jewel of Armenia

Lake Sevan, often called the "Jewel of Armenia," is a high-altitude alpine lake that dominates the landscape of Gegharkunik Province. Situated 1,900 meters (6,234 feet) above sea level, it is the largest lake in Armenia and the entire Caucasus region. The lake's surface area covers approximately 1,241 square kilometers (479 square miles), making up about one-sixth of Armenia's total area. Lake Sevan's beauty is captivating, with its colors and shades changing with the weather, creating a spectrum from dazzling azure to dark blue. Fed by 28 rivers and streams, it is a vital source of freshwater for the region. The lake is divided into two unequal parts, known as Big Sevan and Small Sevan. The lake is known for its unique fish populations, including the endangered ishkhan (prince trout), as well as introduced crayfish and whitefish. Fishing is a popular activity, and local restaurants serve fresh fish dishes with stunning lake views. The area around Lake Sevan has been populated since the 3rd millennium BC, with evidence of ancient settlements and fortresses. The most iconic landmark is the Sevanavank Monastery, founded in 874 AD by Princess Mariam. Perched on a peninsula that was once an island, the monastery offers panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Another significant site is the Hayravank Monastery, located on the southwest shore of the lake, dating back to the 9th-12th centuries. The Noratus Cemetery, with its ancient khachkars (cross-stones), is also a notable attraction near the lake. During the Soviet period, Lake Sevan was heavily exploited for irrigation and hydroelectric power, causing a significant drop in water levels. To address this, tunnels were built to divert water from nearby rivers, helping to stabilize the lake's level. Today, Lake Sevan is recognized as a national treasure, valued for its environmental, economic, social, and cultural significance. It is a popular destination for swimming, water sports, hiking, and simply enjoying the natural beauty of Armenia.
