Vorotnaberd Fortress, also called Davit Bek's Castle, is an imposing historical site in Armenia's Syunik Province. The fortress dates back to the 4th century and was a prominent defense structure. It sits strategically on a ridge, offering panoramic views of the Vorotan gorge. Throughout its history, Vorotnaberd has been captured and liberated by various forces, including Seljuk Turks, Armenian and Georgian armies, and the army of Lenk Temur. In the 18th century, Davit Bek liberated the fortress and used it in the national liberation struggle of Syunik, leading to its alternate name. Today, Vorotnaberd is largely in ruins, but visitors can still explore the remains of its robust stone walls, a citadel, and remnants of dwellings. An underground passageway once connected the fortress to the Vorotan River and nearby Vorotnavank monastery, providing a crucial escape route during sieges. The fortress offers a glimpse into Armenia's medieval military architecture and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
