Discover more about Geehi Huts Walking Track

The Geehi Huts Walking Track, nestled in the Khancoban area of Kosciuszko National Park, offers a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. This easy to moderate 8km return track meanders through the picturesque Geehi Flats, showcasing the rugged Western Fall of the Australian Alps. The trail is renowned for its three historic huts: Geehi Hut, Keeble's Hut, and Old Geehi Hut, all constructed from distinctive river rocks. These huts provide a window into the past, serving as shelters and fishing retreats for graziers and workers of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Geehi Hut, also known as Airstrip or Nankervis Hut, was built in 1952 by Jim Nankervis and his brother. Old Geehi Hut, originally built in 1948, has served various roles, including a youth hostel. The walk involves several river crossings of the Swampy Plain River. Depending on the water level, these crossings can be an adventure in themselves, requiring wading or rock-hopping. For those preferring to keep their feet dry, a bridge on the Alpine Way provides an alternative route to reach the trail on the southern riverbank. Beyond the huts, the track offers panoramic views of the Snowy Mountains, especially stunning at sunset or in winter when the Main Range is covered in snow. The area is also a haven for wildlife, and the clear river invites a refreshing dip or a spot of trout fishing. Camping is available at Geehi Flats, Behrs Flat, and Old Geehi campgrounds, allowing visitors to extend their stay and fully immerse themselves in the park's tranquility.
