If you're driving to the Coal Mines Historic Site from any location within Mount Field National Park, start by taking the Mount Field Road (C420) out of the park. Follow Mount Field Road until you reach the junction with the Lyell Highway (A10). From there, turn right onto the Lyell Highway and continue for approximately 20 kilometers. Look for signs directing you toward Premaydena, and turn onto Coal Mines Road (C341). Follow Coal Mines Road for about 6 kilometers, and you will arrive at the Coal Mines Historic Site. There is a car park available near the entrance, making it convenient for visitors.

For those relying on public transportation, start by taking the bus service from Mount Field National Park to New Norfolk. From New Norfolk, you will need to catch a bus heading towards the Southport or Hastings area. Inform the driver you are going to Coal Mines Historic Site, as this may require you to request a stop at the nearest point along Coal Mines Road. It is recommended to check the bus schedules ahead of time, as services may be limited. Once you are dropped off, it will be about a 1.5-kilometer walk to the site along Coal Mines Road.
