Discover more about Freyschlössl - Roter Turm

Perched on the Mönchsberg, the Freyschlössl, formerly called Roter Turm, offers a glimpse into Salzburg's medieval past. Constructed around the late 13th century, the tower was part of the city's fortifications, guarding the gap between Mönchsberg and Festungsberg. It protected a city gate at this location. Initially owned by St. Peter's Abbey, the tower's military importance waned as new city walls were constructed. In 1862, Carl von Frey, a merchant and art connoisseur, acquired the tower and transformed it into a neo-Gothic residence. His son, Max von Frey, further expanded the property in the early 20th century. The building fell into disrepair during the 20th century but was renovated in 2009 by a new owner. Today, the Freyschlössl remains a private residence and is not accessible to the public. However, its distinctive architecture and prominent location on the Mönchsberg make it a notable landmark in Salzburg. Visitors can admire the exterior of the building while exploring the Mönchsberg and enjoying panoramic views of the city.
