Discover more about Salzburg Carillon

The Salzburg Carillon, German name *Salzburger Glockenspiel*, is more than just a musical instrument; it's a symbol of Salzburg's rich history and cultural heritage. Located in the bell tower of the Neue Residenz on Mozart Square, this carillon consists of 35 bells that chime together to create enchanting melodies. The carillon's history dates back to the late 17th century when Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun commissioned the raising of the tower to accommodate the bells. The bells themselves were purchased in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1695. The intricate mechanism and brass drum were crafted by local artisans, including gunsmith Franz Sulzer and bell founder Benedikt Eisenberger. The carillon first resounded in 1704. Over the centuries, the Salzburg Carillon has become a beloved attraction, captivating locals and tourists alike. Its repertoire includes over 40 pieces, with compositions attributed to Johann Michael Haydn, as well as arrangements from Mozart and his father. The bells ring out daily at 7:00 am, 11:00 am, and 6:00 pm, filling the Old Town with music. Visitors can also take guided tours of the Carillon Tower (end of March to October), offering a glimpse into the carillon's mechanics and panoramic views of Salzburg.
