The Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 2005, offers a sprawling landscape of over 105,000 hectares, bridging Lower Austria and Vienna. This protected area represents a harmonious blend of nature and culture, where rolling hills meet cultivated landscapes, creating a haven for biodiversity and sustainable living. The Wienerwald, or Vienna Woods, acts as a vital green lung for the bustling city of Vienna, offering a readily accessible escape into nature. Its unique location makes it a popular destination for recreation, attracting hikers, cyclists, and those seeking tranquility amidst its diverse ecosystems. Historically, the Wienerwald served as royal hunting grounds from the 11th century until 1850. Over time, human influence has shaped the landscape, resulting in a mosaic of forests, meadows, vineyards, and orchards. This cultural landscape is not only aesthetically pleasing but also ecologically significant, supporting a rich variety of plant and animal life. The reserve boasts an impressive array of flora, with over 2,000 plant species thriving within its boundaries. Beech forests dominate the landscape, but the Wienerwald is also home to diverse forest types, including oak and pine forests. The area is also home to 150 species of breeding birds, rare bat species, red deer, wild boar, European ground squirrel and beaver. Visitors can explore numerous trails that wind through the reserve, providing opportunities for hiking, cycling and birdwatching. Discover charming villages and historical sites that dot the landscape, each telling a story of the region's rich heritage. Visit the Lainzer Tiergarten, an extensive game park, or explore one of the four nature parks within the reserve. The Wienerwald's unique geological features add to its appeal. The region lies at the transition between the Eastern Alps and the Carpathians, with diverse geological conditions that contribute to its varied landscapes. Hot springs and marine terraces provide evidence of the region's geological history.
