Discover more about Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory

The Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory, named after the medieval astronomer Nasreddin Tusi, stands as a beacon of astronomical research in Azerbaijan. Founded in 1959, the observatory is located in the Greater Caucasus Mountains, approximately 22 kilometers north of Shamakhi, at an altitude of 1435-1500 meters. This location was carefully chosen for its clear skies and optimal stargazing conditions, boasting 150-200 clear, cloudless nights per year. The observatory has played a vital role in Azerbaijani astrophysics, contributing significantly to the study of stars and the secrets of the universe. Visitors can explore a small museum, admire the largest telescope in the region, and even stargaze. The facility houses several telescopes, including a 2-meter Carl Zeiss Jena reflector, a 70 cm AZT-8 photoelectric telescope, and a 60 cm Zeiss-600 telescope. More than just a research center, the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory welcomes tourists interested in astronomy. Guided tours provide insights into the observatory's work, offering the chance to observe celestial events and participate in educational activities. Stargazing events and workshops further enhance the visitor experience. The observatory's remote location, away from city lights, provides exceptional views of the night sky, making it a unique destination for those seeking to explore the cosmos.
