Discover more about Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum

Nestled on a hillside near the historic city of Shamakhi, the Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum stands as a silent witness to centuries of Azerbaijani history. This evocative site served as a royal necropolis for the Shirvanshah dynasty and other prominent figures of the Shamakhi Khanate. The name Yeddi Gumbaz translates to "Seven Domes," referring to the original number of mausoleums in the complex. Commissioned by Mustafa Khan for his relatives between 1810 and 1820, the complex reflects the architectural style of the Shirvan-Absheron school. These structures typically feature octagonal or square bases topped with distinctive domes. The exteriors are clad in local white stone, and the remaining domes showcase intricate brickwork patterns. Inside, the mausoleums once housed the remains of the interred, along with elaborate grave markers and decorative elements. Each mausoleum contained 3 to 4 graves adorned with massive gravestones. One of the mausoleums bears an inscription identifying the architect as Usta Taji Memar; the inscription is located above the entrance to one of the mausoleums, where Mustafa Khan's mother was laid to rest in 1810. Sadly, time and seismic activity have left their mark. Today, only three of the mausoleums remain partially intact, while others exist as ruins or foundations. One mausoleum stands without its dome, and the three oldest have been reduced to mere foundations, transforming into peculiar octagonal enclosures for intricately carved stelae. Despite this partial destruction, the site retains a powerful atmosphere of reverence and historical significance. Visiting Yeddi Gumbaz offers a unique opportunity to explore the history of the Shamakhi region.
