The Fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption, located in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, is a significant historical site that has shaped the city's identity. The fortress, dating back to 1649, stands on the left bank of the Pajeú creek's mouth, atop Monte Marajaitiba. Initially constructed by the Dutch during their occupation, the fortress was known as Forte Schoonemborch. However, in 1654, the Portuguese reclaimed the area and renamed it Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, which translates to the Fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption. The city of Fortaleza derives its name from this historic stronghold. The fortress has a square layout with 90 meters on each side and bulwarks at each vertex. These bulwarks are named in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption, Saint Joseph, Dom João, and Prince of Beira. Over the years, the fortress has served various military purposes and has been expanded and renovated. It once housed Bárbara de Alencar, considered Brazil's first political prisoner. Today, the Fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption is a popular tourist attraction and houses the Museum and Pantheon of General Sampaio.
