The most common way to reach Farol Castelhanos is by boat from Vila do Abraão, the main town on Ilha Grande. Farol Castelhanos, inaugurated in 1900, is one of the oldest lighthouses on the Brazilian coast. Located on the extreme eastern point of Ilha Grande, in Angra dos Reis, it represents a piece of Brazil's maritime history. The lighthouse was built in the 19th century and retains its original French design, featuring purely mechanical mechanisms and crystal lenses. Historically, Ilha Grande served as a quarantine site for immigrants and a strategic point during the slave trade era. The construction of the lighthouse was authorized in 1899 to aid navigation. The location of Farol Castelhanos was chosen because of the island's relative distance from the continent. The lighthouse itself was almost installed in Ilhéus, Bahia, but was rerouted to Ilha Grande. Reaching the lighthouse involves a trek through Ilha Grande's lush tropical forest or a boat trip. The T12 trail from Pouso is a challenging 12km hike that leads to the lighthouse, passing beaches and natural pools. Alternatively, visitors can hire a boat from Abraão or Palmas.
