Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From the city center, take the Metro Line 1 (the yellow line) towards Ipanema and get off at the 'Flamengo' station. From there, it's a short walk to Parque Brig. Eduardo Gomes. The cost is around R$5.

  • VLT (Light Rail Vehicle)

    From 'Praça Floriano' VLT stop, take the VLT tram towards 'Parada dos Navios'. After 6 stops, transfer to the VLT line towards 'Orla' at 'Praça Mauá' and get off at 'Aterro do Flamengo' stop. From there, walk towards the waterfront to reach the park entrance.

Parque Brig. Eduardo Gomes, commonly known as Aterro do Flamengo, is one of Rio de Janeiro's most significant urban projects, offering a blend of nature, leisure, and culture. Stretching from the Santos Dumont Airport to Botafogo Beach, the park covers 1.2 million square meters and provides a green escape with stunning views of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. Designed by the renowned Brazilian landscape architect Burle Marx, the park features meticulously landscaped gardens with over 11,600 trees of 190 species, sports fields, walking and cycling paths, and spaces for relaxation. The park is a popular spot for jogging, picnics, and leisurely strolls. On Sundays and holidays, the park is closed to traffic, offering recreation options. The park is also home to cultural monuments such as the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) and the Monument to the Soldiers Fallen in World War II. The area is divided into two parts: Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, which includes the Museu de Arte Moderna, the Marina da Glória, and the Monument to the Dead of World War II; and Parque do Flamengo, which features sports courts and the Carmen Miranda Museum. The park's creation involved land reclamation, using material from the leveling of Santo Antônio hill. The project aimed to improve the quality of life and prevent real estate speculation, becoming a model for integrating urbanism, ecology, and leisure.
