Discover more about Labuan War Cemetery

The Labuan War Cemetery, located on the island of Labuan in Malaysia, is the only war cemetery in North Borneo. It serves as the final resting place for 3,908 Commonwealth war dead of World War II. The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Many buried here were killed during the Japanese invasion of Borneo or the Borneo campaign of 1945. It also holds the remains of prisoners of war, including many who perished on the infamous Sandakan Death Marches, and Allied POWs who died at Batu Lintang camp near Kuching. The high number of unidentified graves is due to the destruction of camp records by the Japanese commandant. The Labuan Memorial, inside the cemetery entrance, commemorates 2,225 Australians who died in Borneo and the Philippines from 1942-1945 and have no known grave. The cemetery is open to the public and hosts an annual Remembrance Day event on November 11th (or the nearest Sunday). It's a place for reflection on the immense sacrifices made during the war. The cemetery lies on Jalan Tanjong Batu Road, approximately 3 kilometers from the town of Victoria and less than 1 kilometer from the airport. It is designed to be accessible to all visitors, including those with disabilities.
