Discover more about Richards-DAR House Museum

The Richards-DAR House Museum, located in the De Tonti Square Historic District in downtown Mobile, is a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Completed in 1860 for Captain Charles G. Richards, a steamboat captain, and his wife, Caroline, this Italianate-style house remained a family residence until 1946. The Ideal Cement Company then purchased the home and used it as a business until donating it to the City of Mobile. Since 1973, the four local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have operated the house as a museum. The house is celebrated for its elaborate cast-iron veranda, featuring allegorical figures representing the four seasons. Inside, visitors can admire the curved cantilevered staircase, marble mantels, original bronze chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The museum is furnished with period antiques, offering a glimpse into upper-class residential life in 19th-century Mobile. The only original piece of furniture is the Weber box grand piano in the entry hall. The 10,000-square-foot house includes a traditional brick courtyard and formal gardens. The intricate metalwork wraps around the front porch and sidewalk. The high-ceilinged rooms and generous veranda reflect the climatic conditions and social customs of the Gulf South. Visitors can enjoy complimentary tea and cookies in the gift shop after their tour. The museum hosts various events throughout the year, including a Christmas celebration and a spring garden party.
