Discover more about Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center

The Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center, formerly known as the LeConte Memorial Lodge, stands as a testament to the Sierra Club's enduring legacy in Yosemite National Park. Built in 1903-04, this rustic granite and wood structure serves as a public education and visitor center, promoting conservation through various programs and displays. Designed by Berkeley architect John White, the building exemplifies the First Bay Tradition, emphasizing the use of native materials and a design that complements its natural surroundings. Originally located in Camp Curry, it was moved to its present location in 1919. The Center was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987, recognizing its architectural significance and the Sierra Club's historical role in Yosemite and the national park system. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits about Yosemite's natural and human history, browse a library with books by Yosemite luminaries like John Muir and Ansel Adams, and participate in interactive programs for all ages. Evening programs on natural history, outdoor adventure, and conservation issues are offered. The center also tells the stories of Sierra Club leaders who championed the protection of Yosemite and other national parks. The Sierra Club has a long and close history with Yosemite National Park, and the Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center is an important part of that. As Bonnie Gisel, a previous curator, stated, "This is where the Sierra Club began its journey to the influential environmental organization it has become through the efforts of thousands of dedicated individuals and families".
