Discover more about Carousel of Happiness

Nestled in the mountain town of Nederland, Colorado, the Carousel of Happiness is a vibrant and heartwarming attraction with a rich history. The carousel features 56 whimsical, hand-carved animals, each with its own unique personality, set upon a restored 1910 Looff carousel frame. The cheerful tunes of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ fill the air, creating a magical atmosphere for riders of all ages. The story of the Carousel of Happiness began with Scott Harrison, a Marine serving in Vietnam. During his time in the war, he found solace in a music box that played Chopin's "Tristesse," evoking visions of a carousel in a mountain meadow. He vowed that if he made it home, he would build a carousel. Years later, Harrison purchased the abandoned frame of a Looff carousel from 1910. Over the next 26 years, he taught himself to carve wood and created the carousel's menagerie of animals, ranging from a moose to a mermaid. The community of Nederland rallied behind Harrison, raising funds to build a permanent home for the carousel, which opened in 2010. The Carousel of Happiness is not only a source of joy but also a symbol of community and perseverance. It is wheelchair accessible and strives to be inclusive for all visitors. The carousel also houses a puppet theater and exhibits related to its history.
