Discover more about Fern Lake

Fern Lake, cradled within the breathtaking expanse of Rocky Mountain National Park, is a destination that seamlessly blends natural beauty with historical significance. The lake itself sits at an elevation of 9,540 feet, offering stunning views of Notchtop Mountain, Little Matterhorn, Knobtop Mountain, and The Gable. The 7.6-mile Fern Lake Trail, a route listed on the National Register of Historic Places, provides access to this alpine treasure. Established in the late 1880s, the trail initially served as a path to "The Pool," a widened section of the Big Thompson River. Over the years, it was improved by local organizations and the Civilian Conservation Corps, solidifying its role in the park's early tourism development. The moderate hike begins at the Fern Lake Trailhead and guides visitors through a diverse landscape. The path meanders alongside the Big Thompson River, passing through forests of aspen, lodgepole pine, and ponderosa pine. Hikers will encounter unique rock formations at Arch Rocks, the serene waters of The Pool, and the cascading beauty of Fern Falls. While the East Troublesome Fire in 2020 and the Fern Lake Fire in 2012 impacted some areas along the trail, the landscape is recovering, with fireweed adding color to the scenery. Despite the fire damage, much of the trail remains lush and green, offering a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
