Discover more about Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, located on 242 West 45th Street in New York City's Theater District, stands as a testament to Broadway's rich history. Designed by Herbert J. Krapp in a modern Spanish style, the theater opened in 1927 as the Royale Theatre. It was part of a complex built by the Chanin brothers that included the Majestic and John Golden (originally Masque) Theatres. Initially intended as a medium-sized venue, the Royale Theatre was designed with excellent acoustics in mind. In 1930, the Shubert Organization took over management. During the Depression, John Golden leased the theatre and renamed it after himself from 1934 to 1936. The Shuberts regained control in 1936, restoring its original name, Royale, and leasing it to CBS as a radio studio until 1940. In 2005, the theater was renamed the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre to honor the Shubert Organization's president from 1972 to 1996. Over the years, the Jacobs has hosted many significant productions, including Mae West's Diamond Lil, Grease, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Once, and The Color Purple. Today, the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre continues to be a vibrant part of the Broadway scene.
