Envisioned as early as 1827 by Hezekiah Pierrepont, the promenade finally came to fruition in the mid-20th century as part of a compromise during the construction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE). Faced with the prospect of the BQE bisecting their neighborhood, Brooklyn Heights residents successfully advocated for a covered highway with a public promenade on top.
Today, the Promenade offers unparalleled views of Lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and the harbor. Lined with benches, trees, and flowerbeds, it's a popular destination for a variety of activities. Joggers, dog walkers, families, and tourists all share the space, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The Promenade is also a historic site, having served as a popular gay cruising area from the 1950s through the 1980s.
While the Promenade itself is owned by the New York City Department of Transportation, the gardens and landscaping are maintained by NYC Parks, with the support of local volunteer groups. This collaborative effort ensures that the Promenade remains a beautiful and welcoming space for all to enjoy. Walking
From the Clark Street subway station (2/3 lines), walk west on Clark Street towards the water. Turn left onto Columbia Heights. Walk south for two blocks to Montague Street. Turn right onto Montague Terrace and walk one block to the Promenade entrance. The walk is approximately 0.3 miles and should take about 7 minutes.
Public Transport
Take the subway to High Street-Brooklyn Bridge station (A/C lines). Walk southwest on Cadman Plaza West, then turn left onto Montague Street. Continue onto Montague Terrace. The Promenade will be on your left. The total travel time is approximately 15 minutes. A single subway fare is $2.90.
