Sara D. Roosevelt Park: A Lower East Side Oasis

Sara D. Roosevelt Park, named after President Franklin D. Roosevelt's mother, is a vital community hub in the heart of Manhattan's Lower East Side. This 7.8-acre park extends for seven blocks, from East Houston Street to Canal Street, providing a refreshing green space amidst the urban landscape. The park's history is as diverse as the neighborhood it serves. Before becoming a park in 1934, the land was occupied by walk-up apartments and, prior to that, an African-American burial ground and a Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery. The park's creation, spearheaded by Robert Moses, aimed to provide playgrounds and resting places for mothers and children. Today, Sara D. Roosevelt Park offers a wide array of facilities and activities. Visitors can enjoy basketball and volleyball courts, soccer fields, playgrounds, and community gardens. The M'finda Kalunga Garden serves as a memorial to the African-American burial ground that once existed on the site. The park also features a bird sanctuary and spaces for chess and bocce ball. While the park has faced challenges, including periods of crime and neglect, community efforts have revitalized it, making it a vibrant gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
