Discover more about Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve

Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve is a jewel on Rarotonga's southwestern coast, celebrated for its exceptional snorkeling and thriving ecosystem. The lagoon's clear, turquoise waters are protected by a natural coral reef, creating a safe and serene environment for exploring the underwater world. Declared a traditional protected area (Rau'i) 20 years ago, the reserve is a testament to the local community's commitment to preserving its marine biodiversity. Snorkelers can expect to see a vibrant array of marine life, including butterflyfish, parrotfish, wrasses, Moorish idols, and sea bream. Giant clams and blue starfish add to the lagoon's allure, while lucky visitors might spot a reef octopus or peacock flounder. The absence of strong currents and the lagoon's shallow depth (generally not exceeding 6ft/2m) make it a safe and enjoyable experience for all skill levels. While the lagoon is accessible at almost any tide, it's best to avoid low tide, as it can be too shallow for comfortable snorkeling. Mornings often provide the clearest waters and the most active marine life. The reserve is easily accessible, with parking available near Aroa Beach. The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Lagoonarium sits directly on Aroa Beach, offering convenient access to the lagoon for its guests. However, even if you're not staying at the resort, you can still snorkel along the beaches between The Rarotongan and Aro'a Beachside Resort, as long as you remain off private property. To ensure the preservation of this underwater paradise, fishing and boating are prohibited within the reserve. Visitors are encouraged to respect the marine environment by avoiding contact with coral and marine life, and by using reef-safe sunscreen.
