Getting There

    From Santa Elena, Curi-Cancha Reserve is a walkable distance of approximately 3.7 km, taking around 45 minutes. Head east towards the Monteverde Cloud Forest, continuing past El Establo Hotel. The road will turn to gravel; continue for a few minutes until you see a large sign for the reserve on your left. Turn left and walk 300 meters to the entrance. Note that the walk includes an uphill section.

    From Santa Elena, take the white Monteverde bus towards Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The bus departs from the center of town and costs approximately $1 USD per person each way. Inform the driver that you wish to be dropped off at Curi-Cancha Reserve. The bus ride takes about 10 minutes, followed by a 300-meter uphill walk to the entrance.

Curi-Cancha Reserve, whose name translates from Inca as “Golden Enclosure,” is a natural sanctuary located in the heart of Monteverde. Established in 1997, the reserve protects 205 acres (83 hectares) of diverse habitats, including primary and secondary rainforest, open pastures, and six distinct life zones. This variety fosters an impressive array of flora and fauna, making it a prime destination for nature lovers. The reserve boasts over 7 km (4.3 miles) of well-maintained trails, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. These trails wind through different ecosystems, offering opportunities to spot over 200 species of birds, including the Resplendent Quetzal, keel-billed toucans, and hummingbirds. Besides birds, visitors may encounter mammals such as agoutis, coatis, monkeys, sloths, and even ocelots. Curi-Cancha's history began in 1970 when the Lowther family purchased the land, allowing the forest to regenerate for 45 years.
