Discover more about Fort Miles Historical Area

Nestled within Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware, Fort Miles Historical Area offers a captivating journey into America's military past. This site served as a crucial coastal defense during World War II, protecting the Delaware Bay and River from enemy naval threats. Construction began in 1938, and by 1941, it was named after Lieutenant General Nelson A. Miles. At its peak, Fort Miles housed nearly 2,500 soldiers and civilian personnel. The fort was equipped with heavy guns, minefields, and searchlights to defend vital trade centers. Today, visitors can explore Battery 519, a 15,000-square-foot underground bunker with museum exhibits that bring Delaware's wartime stories to life. The museum's collection includes artifacts from the Civil Air Patrol, the U.S.S. Arizona Relic, and stories of the 261st Coast Artillery. Visitors can take guided tours led by uniformed interpreters and climb a concrete spotting tower for panoramic views of the seascape. The area also features six barracks buildings, a fire control tower, and the Fort Miles Artillery Park. As the Cold War began, Fort Miles shifted to classified missions, including developing new weapons technology and listening for Soviet submarines. The site now blends historical significance with natural beauty, offering hiking trails, beaches, and scenic overlooks.
