Discover more about Gjógv Natural Harbour

Gjógv Natural Harbour is a captivating destination located on the northeastern tip of Eysturoy Island in the Faroe Islands. The village of Gjógv, named after the 200-meter-long gorge, is perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, offering a picturesque setting with its colorful wooden houses and stunning views. For centuries, this natural harbor has been the lifeline for the residents of Gjógv, providing a safe and sheltered spot for fishing boats. The village was first mentioned in 1584, but its history likely extends further back, with fishing and the selling of dried and salted fish (klippfiskur) being the primary sources of sustenance. At one time, as many as 13 fishing boats sailed from Gjógv. Visitors can explore the harbor by descending the stairs that lead down to the gorge, where they can enjoy the sounds of the sea and admire the dramatic cliffs. The village church, dating back to 1929, was the first in the Faroes to offer services in the Faroese language. A sculpture across from the church serves as a memorial to fishermen lost at sea. The surrounding area offers hiking opportunities with rewarding views of the village and coastline. Hikes to Ambadalur Valley and the vantage point of Hvíthamar are popular choices. During the summer months, visitors may spot puffins nesting by the gorge. While Gjógv has seen a decline in population over the years, tourism has become increasingly important. The village welcomes around 35,000 visitors each year, drawn to its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere.
