Discover more about Gjógv Natural Harbour

Gjógv, pronounced "jyogv" (literally meaning "gorge"), is a captivating village in the Faroe Islands, celebrated for its stunning natural harbor and idyllic setting. The village is situated on the northeast tip of Eysturoy Island, about 63 km north of Tórshavn, the capital. The defining feature of Gjógv is the 200-meter-long sea-filled gorge that serves as a natural harbor, providing shelter for boats and creating a dramatic landscape. Historically, Gjógv has been a vital fishing village, with residents relying on the harbor for their livelihoods. The village was first mentioned in 1584, though it likely existed long before then. At one time, as many as 13 fishing boats sailed from Gjógv. While the population has declined since its peak of 210 in 1950, Gjógv remains a vibrant community with a strong sense of its heritage. Today, Gjógv attracts visitors with its breathtaking scenery and peaceful ambiance. The village's colorful wooden houses, traditional Faroese architecture, and the dramatic gorge create a picture-postcard setting. Visitors can explore the village, walk along the gorge, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs and the North Atlantic Ocean. A notable landmark is the Crown Princess Mary's Bench, offering stunning views of the gorge and the sea. The village church, dating back to 1929, was the first in the Faroe Islands to hold services in Faroese. A sculpture across from the church serves as a memorial to fishermen lost at sea. Gjógv also offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural beauty of Eysturoy. The Ambadalur Trail provides incredible views of the town and surrounding landscape. Hvíthamar, a vantage point a short drive from Gjógv, offers another must-see panoramic view. During the summer months, visitors may even spot puffins near the gorge.
