Discover more about Fort of the Saint-Eynard

The Fort of the Saint-Eynard, also known as Fort Seras, stands as a historical testament to 19th-century military architecture. Built between 1875 and 1879 under the supervision of Richard de Régnauld de Lannoy de Bissy, the fort was part of a defense system designed by General Séré de Rivières to protect Grenoble from invasion. The fort is one of seven that formed Grenoble's fortified belt. Perched at an altitude of 1,338 meters on Mont Saint-Eynard in the Chartreuse massif, the fort offers breathtaking 360° views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can see the Belledonne massif, the Grésivaudan valley, and the city of Grenoble. The fort spans over 274,410 square meters, with buildings covering 65,000 square meters. Originally, it housed around 477 soldiers and 25 artillery pieces. While the fort never saw significant military action, it played a role during World War II when it was occupied by Italian and German forces. Abandoned by the army, it was sold to two municipalities in 1963. After falling into disrepair, the fort underwent restoration starting in 1991 and was opened to the public. Today, visitors can explore the fort, view a permanent exhibition on garrison life, and enjoy temporary art exhibitions.
