Discover more about Heraklion Venetian Port

The Venetian Port of Heraklion stands as a captivating testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Constructed by the Venetians in the 14th century, it served as a vital maritime hub for centuries. The port showcases a unique blend of Venetian and Ottoman elements, reflecting the island's diverse cultural influences. Dominating the harbor entrance is the Koules Fortress (also known as Castello del Molo or Rocca a Mare), built by the Venetians to protect the harbor. This imposing structure offers panoramic views of the sea and city. Visitors can explore the fortress, which features exhibition rooms detailing its history. The fortress is built on two stories and occupies a surface area of 3,600 sq. m. The ground floor comprises 26 apartments, separated from each other by thick walls, which served as food and ammunition warehouses, as well as prison cells where many Cretan rebels were kept and suffered severe torture. Upstairs there were rooms for the castellan and the officers of his garrison. There was also a bakery, a mill and a small church. Today, the Venetian Port is a bustling destination, attracting locals and tourists alike. Cafes, restaurants, and shops line the waterfront, creating a lively atmosphere.
