Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car within Vatnajökull National Park, head towards Route 1 (the Ring Road). From Vik, continue on Route 1 for approximately 22 kilometers. Look for the sign for Sólheimajökull on the left, and turn onto Route 221. Follow this road for about 7 kilometers until you reach the parking area for Sólheimajökull. There is usually no charge for parking, but check for any specific signage regarding fees.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavík to Vik. From Vik, you can catch a local bus (check the schedule in advance) that will take you to Sólheimajökull. Make sure to inform the driver that you want to get off at the Sólheimajökull stop, as not all buses may stop there. Once you arrive, you will need to walk approximately 1 kilometer from the bus stop to the glacier's edge. Be aware that bus schedules may vary, especially in the off-peak seasons, so plan accordingly.

• Guided Tour

  Another option is to book a guided tour from Vik or Reykjavík that includes transportation to Sólheimajökull. These tours typically provide pickup from your hotel or a designated location. Prices for guided tours vary widely based on the inclusions, but expect to pay anywhere from 10,000 ISK to 20,000 ISK per person. This option is highly recommended if you want a comprehensive experience with expert guidance while exploring the area.
