The Donner Party Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, marks the beginning of one of the most tragic and well-known stories of westward expansion in American history. In April 1846, the Donner Party, led by brothers George and Jacob Donner, departed from Springfield with their families and other immigrants, seeking a new life in California. The travelers included James Reed and his family, who were friends with Abraham Lincoln. The site serves as a poignant reminder of the Donner Party's ill-fated journey.
