Taxi

From Gangtok, hire a taxi to Pangthang, the last motorable point before the sanctuary. Negotiate the price, which may vary depending on the season. From Pangthang, it's a 20-minute uphill walk to the sanctuary's entrance. Expect to pay around Rs 2,500-3,000 for a round trip from Gangtok.
Public Transport

Take a shared jeep from Deorali Jeep Stand in Gangtok towards Dikchu. Get off at Pangthang and walk 20 minutes to the sanctuary entrance. Shared jeep fares are economical, but availability may be infrequent. Factor in the cost of the entry fee, which is approximately Rs 55 per adult.

Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary, spanning 51 sq km, is a sanctuary of natural beauty close to Gangtok. Established in 1984, it connects to Khangchendzonga National Park, showcasing Sikkim's rich biodiversity. The sanctuary's name comes from the Lepcha word 'Hambomloh,' referring to the wild avocado trees found here. The sanctuary's altitude ranges from 1,524 to 2,749 meters, resulting in diverse ecosystems. It is home to various species, including the Himalayan black bear, red panda, civet cat, and an array of birds and butterflies. Birdwatchers can spot species like the rufous-headed hornbill and laughingthrush. The flora includes rhododendrons and orchids. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through trekking trails, with the highest point, Tinjure, offering panoramic views of the Himalayas. A 20-minute walk from Pangthang Forest Nursery leads to the sanctuary's entrance. The best time to visit is between March and June for pleasant weather and better animal sighting chances. Permits are required to enter the sanctuary and can be obtained from the Forest Department.
