Discover more about Hitchcock Nature Center

Hitchcock Nature Center, a 1,268-acre preserve managed by the Pottawattamie County Conservation Board, lies in the heart of Iowa's Loess Hills. These hills, formed by wind-blown silt deposited at the end of the last Ice Age, are one of only two places in the world with such deep loess deposits. The center protects remnant prairie and woodland ecosystems, providing refuge for unique plant and animal species. Originally a YMCA camp, the area was acquired by the PCCB and transformed into a nature preserve. Today, Hitchcock Nature Center offers a variety of activities, including hiking, camping, bird watching, and picnicking. The Loess Hills Lodge features modern restrooms, a gallery, a gift shop, and an observation tower. The center boasts a 14-mile trail system that winds through diverse terrains, from easy ridgeline walks to challenging climbs. The Hitchcock HawkWatch, established in 1992, is one of the premier locations in the Great Plains for observing migrating raptors. Visitors can also enjoy an archery range and geocaching. Hitchcock Nature Center provides a unique opportunity to explore the beauty and ecological significance of the Loess Hills. With its diverse landscape and abundant recreational opportunities, it's a destination for nature lovers of all ages.
