Discover more about Pigeon Hole Cave

Pigeon Hole Cave, also known as Poll na gColum, is a captivating natural attraction located just outside the village of Cong, nestled between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. This impressive limestone cave invites visitors to explore its fascinating underground world, shaped by the erosive power of acidic rainwater over centuries. The cave's name, meaning "hole of the pigeons" in Irish, comes from the many pigeons that nest in the area. A steep descent down a stone staircase leads to the main cavern, a spacious area over 12 feet wide with a subterranean stream flowing through it. Railings are in place to assist visitors navigating the sometimes slippery steps. The cave is shrouded in local legend, most notably the tale of the fairy trout. According to folklore, a heartbroken young woman, destined to marry a king's son, vanished after her prince was assassinated. It was said she was abducted by fairies and transformed into a white trout, now residing in the cave's stream. Some say the trout still bears a scar from a soldier's failed attempt to cook it. While visiting Pigeon Hole Cave, take the time to explore the surrounding Cong Woods via the Pigeon Hole Loop. This scenic 4.7km trail passes Cong Abbey, crosses the Cong River, and winds through the woods, offering views of other interesting sites like the Priest's House and Guinness Tower.
