Discover more about Pigeon Hole Cave

Pigeon Hole Cave, known in Irish as *Poll na gColum* (Hole of the Pigeons), is a natural wonder located just outside the village of Cong in County Galway. Situated between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, this limestone cave is part of the Pigeon Hole Loop, a scenic trail that winds through Cong Woods. The cave gets its name from the pigeons that frequently nest in its large chasm entrance. A steep descent down a series of limestone steps, aided by a handrail, leads into the main cavern. Inside, a subterranean stream flows, connecting Lough Mask to Lough Corrib. This stream has played a significant role in the cave's formation through the erosion of the carboniferous limestone rock. Local folklore adds to the cave's mystique, with tales of a magical fairy trout residing in its waters. Legend says the trout is a woman waiting for her true love. While the cave was once open for exploration, it is now blocked off for safety reasons. However, the Pigeon Hole Loop remains a popular trail, offering views of the cave's entrance and the surrounding woodland. The loop also passes other points of interest, including the Priest's House and the Guinness Tower.
