Discover more about Cattedrale di Maria Santissima della Bruna e Sant'Eustachio

The Cattedrale di Maria Santissima della Bruna e Sant'Eustachio, also known as Matera Cathedral, stands as the main Catholic place of worship in Matera. Constructed in the 13th century, the cathedral's Apulian-Romanesque style is a testament to the region's artistic and religious significance. The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of Madonna della Bruna and to Saint Eustace. Built on the highest point of the Civita, the cathedral occupies the site of a former Norman castle and an early Christian place of worship. Construction began in 1230, commissioned by Frederick II, and was completed in 1270. Over the centuries, the cathedral's dedication evolved, from Santa Maria di Matera to Santa Maria dell'Episcopio, and finally to Santa Maria della Bruna in 1389. In 1627, Saint Eustace was added as a co-patron. The exterior of the cathedral features a striking façade with a rose window, blind arches, and small columns. Statues of the Madonna and Saints Peter, Paul, Eustace, and Theopista adorn the main façade. The right side façade includes the Abraham Gate and the Lions' Gate. The bell tower, standing 52 meters tall, is a prominent feature of the Matera skyline. The interior, arranged in a Latin cross layout, showcases a Baroque style. Highlights include a 13th-century fresco of the Madonna della Bruna, attributed to Rinaldo da Taranto, and a 16th-century stone nativity scene by Altobello Persio and Sannazzaro di Alessano. The Chapel of the Annunciation and the remains of two pre-existing chapels with frescoes can also be seen. The wooden choir stalls, dating back to 1453, are another notable feature.
