Discover more about Palazzo del Sedile

The Palazzo del Sedile, standing proudly on Piazza del Sedile, is a historic palace that has played a central role in Matera's civic and cultural life. The palace's origins date back to 1540 when it was constructed by Archbishop Saraceno. It served as the seat of Matera's municipal government for centuries, hosting the Bagliva, a civil assembly responsible for community administration. This assembly, composed of representatives from both the people and the nobility, managed everything from the price of bread to water supply issues. In 1759, the Palazzo del Sedile underwent significant expansion and renovation, resulting in its current Rococo style. The facade is adorned with statues symbolizing good governance: Justice, Fortitude, Temperance, and Prudence. Statues of Saint Eustace, the city's protector, and Saint Irene, the guarantor of peace, stand at the top. The facade also features two bell towers, one with a sundial and the other with a clock. After serving as the Town Hall until 1944, the Palazzo del Sedile transitioned into a cultural center. Since 1965, it has been home to the Egidio Romualdo Duni Conservatory of Music, named after a local composer. The building also houses a modern auditorium in its underground levels, with a capacity of approximately 450 seats. Today, Piazza del Sedile remains a vibrant hub, hosting cultural events, concerts, and markets. Its central location provides easy access to the Matera Cathedral and panoramic views of the Sassi.
