Discover more about The Gathering of the Waters

La Raccolta delle Acque, or The Gathering of the Waters, is a fascinating subterranean complex in Matera dedicated to the city's ancient water collection system. This network of cisterns, canals, and the palombaro (a large underground cistern) showcases the remarkable engineering that allowed Matera to thrive, even in times of drought. Matera's intricate system of rainwater harvesting contributed to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The system features recovery channels, bell-shaped cisterns, and overflow channels, all working in concert to collect and preserve water. The palombaro, a massive cistern carved into the rock, is over 15 meters deep and covers an area of more than 120 square meters, with the capacity to hold up to 1.5 million liters of water. This public water reserve was essential for the survival of the Sassi inhabitants during long periods of drought. Located at Via Purgatorio Vecchio, 12, the site is also connected to the Church of the Old Purgatory. Unearthed in 1933, the excavations revealed ancient tombs dating back to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The church itself was built much later, between the 13th and 15th centuries. Visiting La Raccolta delle Acque provides a unique perspective on Matera's history and the ingenuity of its people in managing their precious water resources.
