Housed within the incomplete Duomo Nuovo (New Cathedral), the Opera del Duomo Museum (also known as the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo) invites visitors to explore the rich artistic legacy of Siena. The museum was established in 1869 to preserve and display artworks that were once part of the Siena Cathedral. The collection includes a variety of sculptures, paintings, and artifacts, with highlights such as the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna, a masterpiece of early 14th-century Italian painting. The ground floor features 14th-century marble statues by Giovanni Pisano, originally adorning the Cathedral's facade, as well as Donatello's Madonna and Child. The upper floors showcase works by Pietro Lorenzetti, Jacopo della Quercia, and Domenico Beccafumi, along with medieval illuminated manuscripts and a treasury of liturgical objects. Visitors can also admire the Rose Window by Duccio di Buoninsegna and ascend to the top floor for panoramic views of Siena. The museum not only displays artistic treasures but also provides insights into the history and cultural significance of the Siena Cathedral complex.
